The ERD editor supports all elements of a OpenEdge database with the notable addition of "foreign key" table relations, although that is not enforced by the OpenEdge DBMS being able to describe relations between various entities (tables) is important for understanding the data flow within the system.

Adding new elements on the database diagram is usually made through the diagram palette, a single diagram file can contain multiple diagrams and the kind of elements that can be created on each diagram depends on the element type associated with the diagram, more information on the subject are found in diagram partitioning section.

If enabled in preferences, the pop-up bars and connector handles can also be used to create new diagram elements, this works the same way as when selecting the new element from the diagram palette.
